How to Use the Obituary Writer

1. Enter the loved one’s full name first. This identifies the obituary you are working on.
2. Work through the 22 guided sections. Answer what you know and use Skip for anything that does not apply.
3. Invite family when you need help. After entering the full name, use Invite Family to Help to create a private link that belongs only to this obituary project.
4. Share that private link with relatives or friends. They can submit memories, family information, corrections, dates, career details, service information or suggested wording.
5. Contributors cannot edit your obituary. Their information comes back to you for review. You remain the primary writer and decide what is included.
6. Review family contributions. Use View Family Contributions, then copy any useful contribution into the appropriate section of the writer.
7. Your writer progress is saved automatically on this device. Continue on the same browser and device whenever possible.
8. Review everything before creating the draft. Check names, dates, relationships and service details carefully.
9. Create and edit the final obituary draft. The writer uses the information you supplied; the finished text remains editable.
10. Copy, print or save the obituary. Have another family member proofread it before publication or submission.

How Family Contributions Work

One obituary. One primary writer. Private family input.

Each obituary gets its own private contribution link. Anyone with that link can send information to the family’s primary writer, but they cannot see the obituary draft, change the draft, publish anything, or view another contributor’s submission.

If the link is shared with the wrong person, the primary writer can choose Replace Shared Link. The old link stops working and a new private link is created.

Do I have to answer every question?
No. Skip anything that does not apply or that the family does not want included.

Can more than one person write directly in the obituary?
No. One person remains the primary writer. Other family members send private contributions for the primary writer to review.

Can contributors see my obituary?
No. The contribution link only opens the private contribution form.

Can contributors change or delete my work?
No. They cannot edit the obituary or another person’s submission.

Can I stop an old contribution link from working?
Yes. Use Replace Shared Link to create a new link and invalidate the old one.

Will the writer make up missing facts?
It is designed to build the obituary from the information you provide. The family should still proofread the final draft carefully.

Does creating a draft publish the obituary?
No. The family remains in control of the finished text.
